Our Community
Rooted in Community
Greengos is built on the belief that tourism should contribute positively to the place it exists in—its people, culture, and environment. We focus on local employment, cultural respect, environmental responsibility, and long-term investment in the communities we share this landscape with.
Scholarships
Mujeres Adelante
In this part of Guatemala, access to education beyond primary school is extremely limited for girls due to rural isolation, financial constraints, and long-standing cultural barriers. To help address these challenges, Greengos offers the Mujeres Adelante Scholarship for girls and young women from the village of Chicanuz, supporting them at two key stages.
We support local girls and young women in participating in the Women in Agroecology Leadership for Conservation (WALC) program, run by the Community Cloud Forest Conservation. Support includes guidance through the application process, coordination with program leaders, required materials and clothing, transportation, and follow-up assistance with the completion of post-workshop projects.
Following completion of the WALC program, the scholarship continues with financial and logistical support to help students pursue further education at a school in Lanquín. This includes school supplies, uniforms, school and boarding fees, transportation, and practical assistance to help education remain a stable, long-term path.
Greengos Christmas for Kids
Greengos Christmas for Kids is a very special event for our team, the surrounding community, and all the guests who have joined us over the years.
Every December 24, we load up the 4×4 truck and ATVs and drive through the village of Chicanuz, giving toys to more than 400 children along the way. It’s a day about embracing the true spirit of the holiday season—coming together, giving back, and celebrating the community that makes this place so special.
Local Projects
Some of our community involvement takes the form of hands-on projects that improve shared spaces in the surrounding villages. These efforts respond to specific needs and are usually undertaken at the request of local leaders.
Over the years, this has included renovations to a rural school, donating a water cistern to a remote village, and helping repair the local Centro de Salud. During the pandemic, we also donated over 10,000 kg of maize to families in nearby villages in response to food shortages at the time.
Some projects are one-off, while others arise as new needs emerge. Together, they reflect a hands-on approach focused on practical, tangible support.
Cultural Exchange
At Greengos, we value meaningful cultural exchange with the local Q’eqchi’ community and prioritize participation that is respectful, invited, and rooted in everyday life.
We take part in local traditions and celebrations throughout the year, including Día de los Muertos, Semana Santa processions, birthdays, weddings, and other community events. We also organize village visits to Chicanuz and beyond, spending time with local families in their homes —talking, learning, and taking part in everyday activities such as making tortillas, collecting copal, weaving textiles, and more.
Guests are always welcome to join us on these experiences. While they don’t follow a fixed schedule, interested guests are encouraged to ask about availability and join when timing allows.
